GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Taffy Howard and Tonchi Weaver are gathering 3,100 signatures on a petition that would let residents vote on the $125 million Libertyland USA financing plan by Sept. 26, following the Rapid City Council's approval of the project. In response, project manager Joel Brannan launched the decline2sign.com campaign to counter referendum plans that could force a special election costing about $100,000—petition signatures are being collected at local sites.  Rapid City Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Friday, Sept. 19, about 350 Special Olympic athletes played bocce ball at Rapid City's bocce ball courts off Omaha Street during the Special Olympics Fall Classic, showing their skill and sportsmanship.  Rapid City Journal
  • On Friday, about 350 Special Olympics athletes gathered at Rapid City bocce ball courts for the Fall Classic, where NASCAR legend Rusty Wallace, Mayor Jason Salamun, and officials cut the ribbon for 16 courts—an expansion that doubled the complex after groundbreaking on Aug. 5. Today, a softball competition is held at the Star of the West complex as athletes enjoy friendly and inclusive competition.  Rapid City Journal
