CULTURE NEWS

  • The Journey Museum in Rapid City will open the free Lakota Contemporary art exhibition on October 9 with an opening reception from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Adelstein Gallery and the exhibit will run through May 8—featuring intergenerational works curated by Marty Two-Bulls Jr.—with additional interactive programs during Free Community Weekend on October 11 and 12.  Native Sun News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, Jessica Pollema of South Dakota Canvassing Group called for all seven members of the state Board of Elections—including Secretary of State Monae Johnson—to resign and for the board to be abolished after it refused to rule on a petition about laptop use in auditor offices, while Rick Weible said he would refile his complaint under the federal Help America Vote Act following the board’s unanimous decision that it lacked jurisdiction.  KELOLAND
  • South Dakota lawmakers passed a bill for a new $650 million prison to add rehab services, but some say better treatment is needed for repeat offenders. Governor Rhoden signed an order to form a group—studying re-entry practices and Native American needs—while construction will take four years.  South Dakota News Watch

  • The 437 Project has local runners on a mission to save lives by raising money for The Helpline Center—a resource for mental health support. Over the next few days, volunteers and runners will run through your town to raise awareness and help prevent suicide.  KELOLAND
