COMMUNITY NEWS

  • NDN Collective is bringing back Macklemore to downtown Rapid City for Indigenous People’s Day with a free event that features live music + speeches + a parade + vendors + food trucks + local service organizations.  Rapid City Journal
  • The Black Hills Area Community Foundation announced a $100k fund to help neighborhoods between I-90 and North Street that struggle with food access and poverty—officials said they are working on further plans to expand support in the area.  Rapid City Journal

CULTURE NEWS

  • Tribal leaders from the Lakota, Cheyenne and Arapaho communities say that the record vehicle count at the rally and increased development around Bear Butte are disturbing sacred practices and pushing the site closer to commercial ventures—tribal advocates call for stronger buffer zones and respect for spiritual traditions. Local officials have not proposed new restrictions while concerns over the sacred nature of Bear Butte continue to grow.  KBHB

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Black Hills State University-Rapid City celebrated the grand opening of its new addition—an updated facility that expands local nursing education by modernizing training spaces.  Rapid City Journal

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Officials in several Black Hills cities recalled that 12 years ago, Winter Storm Atlas caused heavy snow that knocked down trees, power lines, and stranded vehicles. They now share updated snow removal policies and winter driving tips to help residents prepare for cold weather—reminding everyone of the storm's lasting impact.  KBHB
  • Rapid City is proposing an opioid settlement committee and will ask the state for $25 million from national settlements with Purdue and other drug makers to help local recovery efforts. The funds will be distributed to support community programs for those affected by the opioid crisis.  Rapid City Journal

SPORTS NEWS

  • Douglas fought hard on Thursday night against the Sturgis Scoopers, but the Scoopers won 3-1 in four sets—Olivia Vliem led with eight kills while Danica Dschaak added ten kills.  KBHB
  • The Spearfish Spartan girls tennis team beat Rapid City Central 6-3 at Parkview on Thursday, dropping Central's season record to 0-18 (Cobblers) while Spearfish moved to 3-15 (Spartans).  KBHB
