ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Crews responded to a fire at Coeur’s Wharf gold mine’s crushing facility near Lead at 6:55 a.m. Wednesday—scheduled maintenance caused the fire as local firefighters contained it quickly and all workers were accounted for with no injuries reported.  KELOLAND

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Rapid City Area Schools board approved a new school calendar — the schedule will guide classes and holidays for the upcoming school year.  Rapid City Journal

FINANCE NEWS

  • South Dakota Lottery officials reported that a $2 million Powerball prize from a ticket purchased at Gas N More in Mobridge and a $500K Powerball Double Play prize from a ticket bought at Hy Vee Gas in Sioux Falls remain unclaimed, with deadlines set for Feb. 19, 2026 and Feb. 23, 2026 respectively. Unclaimed funds will revert to the state’s Unclaimed Prize Fund if the winners do not claim their prizes—prompting a final call for interested players.  KBHB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A coalition of state attorneys general, including one from North Dakota, is challenging Union Pacific's plan to buy Norfolk Southern for $85 billion. Their letter warns the merger will cut competition, raise prices, and hurt national security—threatening local industry and farmers.  Dakota News Now
  • Gov. Larry Rhoden said the state will join a federal tax credit program to fund private school education—he prefers to give funds to private schools instead of the federal government—and noted that this move is separate from any future legislative proposals.  KBHB

HEALTH NEWS

  • In Rapid City, residents are invited to donate blood at the Pistols and Pulaskis drive and vote for South Dakota Wildland Fire or South Dakota Highway Patrol—supporting local health and safety efforts. Organizers said the drive will help provide needed resources.  Rapid City Journal
