- ➤ On Monday morning, first responders reached a small plane crash in the New Underwood area east of Rapid City. The aircraft (with two people on board) was reported shortly before more help was en route. KBHB
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ GasBuddy’s survey of 628 stations shows that South Dakota gas prices rose 1.1 cents per gallon to average $2.92 today—prices that are still 26.9 cents lower than they were a year ago—and the rise comes as the state gets ready for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. KBHB
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ South Dakota teachers earned an average of $56,328 during the 2023-24 school year—falling short of the $59,659.25 target that could have boosted the state’s national ranking by eight spots. Lawmakers and education experts said slow funding increases mean the gap will likely widen as the next target of $62,821.19 looms and future budget cuts are expected. KELOLAND
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Rapid City’s Legal and Finance Committee will review a proposal to voluntarily annex about 1,250 acres near the Regional Airport tomorrow at 12:30 p.m.—if approved, the measure will advance to the City Council on August 4 and then to further planning reviews in August and September. KBHB
- ➤ Rapid City is set to review a vacation rental ordinance that was developed over the past year by a local advisory committee and introduced at an open house on July 24 where over 50 residents learned about the proposed rules. The ordinance defines vacation rentals, requires conditional use permits for homes with more than five bedrooms, and sets guest and parking limits—public hearings will start in August as the process moves to the City Council.
