Sturgis Police Chief Geody Vandwater said that during Saturday’s 85th Motorcycle Rally police responded to 3 injury and 2 non-injury accidents — one involving a rider critically injured after fleeing a traffic stop — and handled increased fight calls plus drug, DUI and illegal parking citations while the Meade County Sheriff’s Office logged 208 service calls, multiple traffic stops and several arrests.
Senate candidate Brian Bengs, a Navy veteran from Hot Springs, said he prefers thinking for himself over following party lines as he campaigns for a U.S. Senate seat; he believes taxes and health care are the key issues.
He is running as an independent against incumbent Mike Rounds and needs 3,502 signatures to qualify for the 2026 general election ballot—Bengs emphasized that a less partisan approach could improve the country.
At the Sturgis Rally in the Black Hills, daredevil Colby Raha broke the world record with a 205-foot jump on a Harley V-twin at the Thunderdome on Saturday night — he broke the previous record set in 2015 — and hundreds of riders cheered him.
